We received news from Ohio State University Extension’s agricultural law program on the passing of Paul Wright. Paul had a direct impact on NC State Extension’s farm law program, having mentored me (Branan) early in my career as a private lawyer working in the agriculture sector. He set the mold for a farmer’s lawyer.

I met Paul when I co-presented with him at an American Agricultural Law Association (AALA) conference in 2009 on the subject of farm succession planning. I worked in the non-profit sector at the time, very much looking for a way to establish a private law practice dedicated to serving the farm sector. Our meeting eventually resulted in an invitation to join his Ohio firm (as a VA/NC attorney), where I learned an incredible amount of wisdom from him, his protege Robert Moore, and the others in his firm during that time. While with his firm I had him down to North Carolina for several presentations to farmers on farm succession.
It was Paul I tried to emulate in my law practice, trying to become a lawyer known for serving farmers. He and his crew got me into my own law practice trying to do the same thing, and it was these lessons and experiences from that time in practice that form much of the backdrop of NC State Extension’s Farm Law and Tax for Producers and Landowners.
Thank you Paul, sad to hear of your passing, RIP
