Vance County Cooperative Extension will host another installment in our Heirs Property at the Community Level program this coming Thursday, July 24. The program - a USDA/RMA-funded program developed by the Southern Rural Development Center (SRDC) and Alcorn State University (Mississippi) - offers perspectives on heirs property and co-tenancy matters, including family tree building, co-tenancy management, and resolution of clear title. Though focused on resolution of and useful economic management fractional interest ownership parcels, such meetings often devolve into thoughtful forums on pressing land issues of the day, including agriculture and forestry use property taxes, bona fide farm zoning, conservation easement programs and succession planning.
The Vance County Landowners and Heirs Property gathering is a continuation of similar programs evolving in quality over the course of 2023 and 2024, with former hosts including Caswell, Robeson, Halifax and Guilford Counties.
The NC Extension program is led by Dari Biswanath, Assistant Professor for Natural Resource Development with NC A&T University. Other team members are Robert Andrew Branan, JD with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (NCSU), and Drs. Kurt Smith of NCSU Forestry Department and Noah Ranells of NC Farmlink. The team most recently presented a forum at Western Carolina University in Cullowee in collaboration with the North Carolina Agricultural Mediation Center.
